I know it’s been nine months, but I’ve finally managed to put together a report of sorts on my trip to England. Things did not go as planned.

Sept 4, 2024

My flight from Grand Rapids to O’Hare was probably the best part of my trip over. I got there around 10am and then spent almost a full day at O’Hare, waiting for my flight. Once I was finally seated my seat mate sneezed and hacked her way across the Atlantic. Unfortunately, the plane was full so I couldn’t be moved. Or she couldn’t. Anyway, I hoped for the best.

It had been agreed that Anne would pick me up and that we’d head for her brother’s house. I had worn a mask during the trip over and kept it on in the car. I’d met Neil and his wife, Andrea, during a previous trip, and was eager to spend time with them again.

Sept 5, 2024

It was a lovely day, so we decided to do some sightseeing.

Our first stop was the Middle Littleton Tithe Barn, one of the largest and most notable tithe barns in England. It’s rumored that Richard and his men camped in the barn on their way to Bosworth, but there’s no historical evidence to confirm it.

2. Middle Littleton Tithe Barn

From there we drove to Pershore Abbey. Its main claim to fame is its age. Its foundation is alluded to in a charter of King Ethelred of Mercia (675-704 AD.) Fires, storms and an earthquake battered the Abbey, but Henry VIII came the closest to destroying it during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Most of the Abbey was demolished, with only the tower, choir and south transept remaining.

From there we drove back to Worcester, where we made time to visit its cathedral.

While some form of the Cathedral has been in place since 680AD, the present building was begun in 1084. It’s a magnificent building, whose major claims to fame are the tombs of King John, and Prince Arthur Tudor, Henry VII’s eldest son who died at the age of sixteen at Ludlow Castle.

The River Severn runs behind the cathedral, which stands on a cliff on the left bank. It’s a lovely spot. Lots of swans!

Left for Middleham. It was evening by the time we got there, so we checked in at the Priory and then walked over for a creme tea at the Middleham cafe.

The next day it rained all day, so we stayed in. Mostly watched tv, until dinner time when we went down the street to the Richard III Inn. Their food is usually excellent, but my appetite wasn’t what it normally is. By the time we got back to the Priory I was feeling a bit under the weather.

Felt pretty good when I woke up, so we went down for breakfast. That’s when it hit. I barely made it back to the room, where I collapsed on the bed. The proprietress had a covid test kit, which she kindly gave to us. It was positive. Luckily, Anne had had covid just a few months before, so was still immune. I slept most of the day and that night.

Sept 9, 2024

I was still feeling low, not bad, just not great. So no visiting Middleham Castle or York; no heading up to Hexham and Hadrian’s Wall. Instead we decided to drive back to London.

Apparently, having had the covid vaccine, I had a mild case of it. For the next week I either slept or we watched movies. It wasn’t a terrible time; Anne is always fun to hang out with. And we both love horror movies, so there was A Knock at the Cabin, and all three Quiet Place movies. A little different was Wicked Little Letters. I loved it, though certainly wasn’t what I’d had in mind!

Sept 17, 2024

I tested negative! And since I was feeling pretty good, we decided to try for a short day out. I’m not what you’d call a Tudor fan, but I’d always wanted to see Hever Castle, where Anne Boleyn grew up. We met up with Chris, another good friend, and spent a few hours roaming the grounds and the castle.

It’s not as big as I thought it would be, but the grounds are spectacular. I bought an Anne Boleyn bear, but not an Henry VIII.

Sept 18, 2024

We headed into town, stopping first at the Jewel Tower. THere’s not much left of it, but it was still interesting. At one time or another it’s been a Tudor storeroom, a House of Lords record archive, and the National Weights and Measures office.

I’d been to Westminster Cathedral before, but it’s so huge, there’s always something to see. So many outstanding people are buried there that have nothing to do with royalty.

64. Charles Darwin tomb at Westminster 65.1 Isaac Newton Tomb

Of course, there are those, too.

70. Edward I Tomb 70.1 Edward III Tomb

We only stayed a couple of hours. Though I felt fine, I still tired easily. So back to Anne’s for another movie. Later I packed up for my trip home.

Sept 19, 2024

It’s lucky that I hadn’t had a worse case of covid, because getting home was a nightmare. They changed my seat on the plane (from aisle to a middle seat,) which wasn’t terrible, but I’d payed for the aisle seat (I was later able to get a refund.) The flight was okay, but O’Hare was a mess.

Customs was its usually trial. I think it took over an hour to get through (as opposed to at Heathrow where it took 10 minutes.) Then I had to get my bags, go through security again, then take a bus from the terminal where we landed to where my gate for home was. AThe line for that was another half hour, at least. Of course the bus dropped us off on the other end of the terminal, so I had to hoof it all the way to my gate. I managed to get there with twenty minutes to spare.

I’m hoping to go back next year. Of course that all depends on what’s going on with the Orange tyrant and his minions. By then they may be pulling citizens aside and not allowing them back in. I don’t know, maybe that wouldn’t be such a bad thing as long as BA flew me back to England.

My visits to Phoenix are usually pretty low key; we watch lots of movies, either at home or at the theatre, we shop. Visit friends and family. But this time was a bit different.

To begin with, my younger brother managed to get some realistically priced tickets to the Jimmy Buffett concert. It had been a good twenty years since the last time I’d even been to a concert. But Jimmy Buffett, boy, had we been fans. I’d been to at least a dozen of his concerts between the ages of 23 and fifty.

And they had all been lots of fun, until college folk got wind of him. Then his music changed; the feeling at the concerts changed, too. So I wasn’t sure how much fun this was going to be.

I shouldn’t have worried. The college kids were gone, and most of the attendees were at least into their thirties. He played a lot of his own standards; there was only one song that I didn’t recognized. A great time was had by all.

The 11th being my sister’s birthday, we all took her to lunch at her favorite restaurant, Papadous Seafood Kitchen. I bit pricey, but the food is superb.

But, as usual, we did have a family gathering. Papago Park does seem to have become our favorite meeting place. Siblings, nieces and nephews, cousins, and my step-son and his family, all were there. To top it off, the weather was perfect. We even went for a hike!

There was still the usual. We went to the theatre two or three times, and watched a bunch of movies at home (my sister loves to watch movies.) My favorite cousin came for a visit. It was hard to leave.

The second weekend in July is usually reserved for Shore Leave. And after three years absence, we were looking forward to going to the con. But since we had waited too long to decide on whether we were actually going, we missed out on a room at the con hotel and ended up in the hotel across the street. Even worse, as the days passed, it became very evident that we would be the only two from our group who were going to be able to make it.

So after some thought, I canceled the hotel reservation. We decided instead to spend a week in Philadelphia. Of course, we couldn’t have picked a worse week, as it was stifling hot all the time we were there. But it hadn’t occurred to us until after we had bought our plane tickets that, because we were’t going to the con, we could have picked a different time. So we thought, what the hell.

July 14th

I arrived at the hotel hours before Anne, so spent the time reading and watching tv. It turned out that you could get to your own Netflix account, so there was actually stuff to watch. Once Anne got there we went out to find something to eat, and then settled in for the night.

July 15th

Hot or not, we walked the mile and a half to the city center where all the monuments and museums are.

We saw the Liberty Bell. )

It's been almost two weeks since I last posted. Blame it on a trip to Phoenix, and then going through the trial of having a whole house generator installed.

Nothing extraordinary to report. The time in Phoenix was mostly spent spending time with my sister. The only picture I took was of our lunch at Dillon's which shares space with the Wildlife World Zoo. So here's a picture of our luncheon companions, even if they were on the other side of a short wall.

Flamingos

Did see several movies (my sister loves to go to the theatre,) and visited some cousins. And speaking of cousins, here's me with my siblings and all our first cousins on my mom's side. Only four are missing, my younger brother, two male cousins and a female cousin who died quite awhile ago. I'm the one near the center with the long gray t-shirt.

Anyway, back to my regular posting soon!

England Trip Week Two - Sept 18 - 24th

Sept 18th

After breakfast we started out for Haworth. Because of where it is, we did have to drive through a little bit of the Moors, but it wasn’t too bad. Still, we were glad to finally reach the town.

England Trip Week One - Sept 9th - 17th

It’s been three years, so it was that time again, time for my two-week trip to England.

Sept 9th and 10th

It’s lucky that how well a trip is going to go isn’t determined by how well your flight is. If it was, I would have been in a world of hurt.

It began with my flight to Chicago, which was held up for almost two hours because of bad weather there. But since I always book flights that are several hours apart, I wasn’t concerned. I got to Chicago with plenty of time to spare. My flight out of Chicago was late getting out, too, because there was such a backup.

Finally in the air, I settled in for a long flight. After dinner I watched Rocketman, and then tried to sleep. My luck, that’s when we started having turbulence. So we landed in London at 9:05a, their time, without my having had a wink of sleep.

Anne was waiting, and after a short bus ride we reached her house. I ended up taking a nap later on. Add a long night’s sleep, and by the next morning I was raring to go.

Sept 5 through 12

Sept 5

Grantham was only a couple of hours away, which was one reason I picked a hotel there, the Angel & Royal, as our first stop. It’s a very old hotel. It’s foundation dates back to the 9th century.

It's only taken me two months to get this done, which is really good news as I still have posted my trip to Mackinac Island (2014,) or to Georgia (2015.) Must be losing my touch. *g* I'll get around to them eventually. But here, at least, is my trip to England. Enjoy!

Sept 1

My trip started out great, with me being bumped up to business class. It made it easier to get some sleep–which I would need, because a couple of hours after landing Anne and I were off to the theatre to see Martin Shaw in Hobson’s Choice. And third row seats!

01. At the theatre

Martin was wonderful. He has great comedic timing, and stole every scene he was in, which was most of them. Luckily, the rest of the cast was excellent, too.

Afterwards, we returned to Anne’s house to rest up for the next day when we would travel to High Wycombe and the Lane End Convention Centre for the K/S convention Anne was hosting.

Sept 2-4

It’s a beautiful place, with acres of gorgeous scenery. Perfect for three days of constant K/S.

Lane End Grounds Wycombe Hall

We had games, panels (one of which I led,) from the history of fandom, to the future of space travel, and a really great vidding workshop.

The Saturday night dinner saw several people dress up for the costume contest. There was a thrall (as in The Gamesters of Triskelion,) an evil Alice, a ST:TMP officer, and the Lights of Zetar, among many. First place went to Rhaegal as the thrall.

Unfortunately, I can’t post any of the pictures of members, but here’s a few of the items I picked up at the con. Some I bought, some like the purple ornament and the calendar, were part of the con bag. And the ornament was created on a 3D printer.

And, of course, the cake!

Monday rolled around far too soon, but I was looking forward to two weeks of traveling all over the country. After breakfast, we packed and then headed off for Grantham.

On to Grantham!

And it was. It was very warm and very dry the day I flew in, but, hey, I'd known that was going to be the case. It was May 11th—how else would it be? Still, I was home. As much as I love experiencing actual changes of seasons in Michigan, I think Phoenix will always be home. I was born there, spent almost fifty-five years there, and most of my family is still there. But on this trip visiting family was really secondary. After being chauffeured around England three times already (and a fourth time planned,) by my friend, Anne, I thought it only fair that I return the favor at least once.

Finally, there was time to sit and work my way through all the pictures, pamphlets, books, postcards and other sundry paraphernalia I bought in order to write up my travel 'report' on "What I did on my summer vacation."

It's taken me awhile to get this done. Okay, three months but RL obligations have had me pretty nicely tied up. Up until last Thursday, I've had visitors for all but one week since my return. And now that I've actually sat down and done this, I know there's no way I could have managed it before. To all who have asked about my trip, thanks for your kind patience in waiting for this report. I hope you enjoy the journey just as much as I did.

Week Two - On to Middleham! )

I'm back! And it only took three days to catch up on all my e-mails, LJ and group posts, not to mention unpacking everything I lugged back. If there's a book about Richard III out there I don't now have, I'm not sure I want to hear about it. :-)

Quickly scanned through most of my flist posts, finding some great new stories on [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_78 and [livejournal.com profile] nellhowell's wonderful new Pros lists. Great job, Nell!

Also, a belated Happy Birthday! to [livejournal.com profile] elynross and [livejournal.com profile] agentxpndble. I hope you both had a wonderful time on your special day.

Behind the cut is my "report" from abroad, about the best two weeks I've ever had. I'm already scheming on how to get back!
