Mammogram. Ugh.

I did oversleep until 7:45 AM. I’m going to have to skip my lunchtime meeting and shower instead. No, I just took lunch really early.

It’s raining out, and Bella looked dubious about going out.

I made a bonehead mistake at work, and I want to retire right now. But I can't.

I attended a "Finding Your Why [for Volunteering]" webinar at lunchtime. At first, I didn't think that I was learning much (I know what my skills are), but I wound up realizing that I want to volunteer in the arts, an area in which I haven't volunteered. I asked if the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on campus took community volunteers, and they do! I filled out a volunteer form. And I might be able to attend concerts for free! That excites me!

The Urbana Park District got back to me about volunteering. I'm going to be a part of the tear down/cleanup crew for the Read Across America event on Saturday. (I told them that I wasn't a morning person :))

The mammogram went okay. The technician was good. I'm slightly annoyed that I had to pay a dollar for parking, but at least it was only a dollar.

Oliver is being a pain and is walking on my computer.

My arthritis is bugging me.

We’re having the first thunderstorm of the season.

I need to bug the garage guy to get the gravel out of my backyard because I need to plant grass from mid-March to mid-April. I so hate dealing with him.

Gracie was jumping up and down barking at Oliver. Bella groomed Gracie, and Gracie settled down. Good job, Bella.

Everyone, including me, has been fed. Now I’m waiting for my Walmart order. Maybe I should start gathering garbage (done). Crud. They’re predicting rain the rest of the night. I guess I’ll be okay to take out the garbage in my all-weather jacket and mud shoes. No, it’s going to keep storming. I think that I’ll put the garbage bags by the back door and call it good. No, I got the garbage out while waiting for my grocery order. And I got most of the groceries in. (I'll get the rest of the soda tomorrow morning.) Got my clothes laid out for tomorrow.

I can't get the login code for two-factor authentication for Schwab, so I don't know what happened with my stocks. Something is down.

Now to bed soon.

It occurred to me to get a nail gun and Westminster Chiming Clock on eBay, and I ordered both. And they’ll arrive at my door!

Facebook was showing clips of the Harry Potter movies, and I have an urge to watch them again.

It looks more like rain than snow out, or at least the snow is melting when it hits the ground.

Got up at 7:30 AM. There was a very light dusting of snow. Lay down again for 15 minutes. It was nice to snuggle under the blanket. The dogs came in on the first try.

Huh. I expected the stock market to go down due to the war in Iran, but my stocks look pretty good, except for financial services stocks.

I asked my boss if it was okay to skip the annual conference for the software that we manage (it's in LA this year), and she was cool with it. Excellent. I need to get more organized before going to another one.

I ordered a hook-and-eye fastener for the upstairs door because Oliver knows how to open it when it's closed. It comes in a two-pack, which is what I need so that I can hook it from the inside or outside. Free delivery from Home Depot.

Lily is being a dickens today. She walked on my computer twice and shut it down once, and jumped on my lap and dug her claws in. Sheesh.

Finished a project at work.

Choir went well. It was our piano player’s birthday so we had pound cake and berries. We’re singing another song that I might like for my memorial service, “Let the Life I’ve Lived Speak for Me”. Maybe the choir could sing it if it’s still around.

Submitted a Walmart order for way late because tomorrow is going to be a zoo. I have meetings most of the day up to my mammogram mid-afternoon. The order took a long time because this has been a glitch-ridden day.

I'm staying up late to wash clothes for tomorrow because I'll need to go to my mammogram.

Oliver and Lily are being manic.

Oops, forgot to mention that I got my vegetable seeds. Now I just need the planters.

More pseudo-LEGOs

I don't think I mentioned that HalfshellHusband got me a fantastic Lumibricks Time-Rift Library set for Valentine's Day. I'm really looking forward to putting it together!

In the meantime, I just finished a Starry Night set I got 2-3 years ago and never put together because of all the time spent on the house rebuild or (after moving back home) because it was still in an unopened box. I picked this set out as a birthday present however many years ago, partly because of the Starry Night theme (I have a LOT of Starry Night "merch") and also because it includes a Van Gogh minifigure with his painting. \o/

What I failed to notice at the time was that it was a mini-brick set. I haven't worked with those before, and the danger of something rebounding off the other pieces (or just falling) is very high. The smallest pieces are extremely hard to find on our Oriental-patterned rug. I didn't lose anything permanently, though the set had a few missing pieces (I improvised) and a LOT of extra pieces. The instructions were all pictures, with the number 1, 2, and 3 being the only non-Japanese (Chinese?) parts, and one of the blues was REALLY hard to make out on the diagrams— I had to get out a flashlight. This was a super-challenging build. :O

Midway through the build:
StarryNight_midAssembly.jpg

StarryNight_Box.jpg

Three-quarters of the way done:
StarryNight_3_4ths_Done.jpg

Final product with mini-artist:
StarryNight_Complete.jpg

I would recommend this set, except that it's no longer being made. There are other Starry Night sets, but the resulting "pictures" are usually less accurate than this one. Someone did a very creative job designing this! But if you're tempted, there's the original LEGO set (expensive!). And also these three knockoff sets at varying prices (all of which have a mini-painting, and you could add your own made-up mini-figure)! That last set is actually pretty good. All are mini-bricks, though, so be warned.

In other news, I put the coffee table together. That amounted to screwing in the legs, which were in two pieces to accommodate a flat lower section. The biggest challenge? Breaking down all that styrofoam to get it in our garbage can. It'll probably take 2-3 weeks to get rid of it.

TV finished

Nothing, sob.

Okay, maybe I could count the complete video of Wu Lei's birthday livestream (from his birthday in December) which I found on youtube? It's about an hour long, and I watched that a few times until I understood at least some very small parts of it. Yay? That took up a lot of time, too, lol. eowuli on twitter promised to sub it, but I haven't seen a subbed version of it yet. The raw is here on youtube.

TV new (ongoing)

I'll count Saint Pierre here. The second season has started, and I have now watched one episode. I had forgotten how much getting used to Arch's French accent takes. I had no trouble with it (loved it, in fact) by the end of season 1, and I'm surprised that I'm apparently starting from scratch again now. I don't know why I missed the show so much, but I did, and I'm happy to have it back. The first ep took me right back into the town and the characters. I'm looking forward to the season.

TV continued

The Company (16/30), the time-traveling cdrama. I watched eight episodes of that this month. Still enjoying the BL vibes, wondering if they really put them in there intentionally or if I'm just wearing slash goggles. Peak time travel shenanigans in ep 10, then they set logical boundaries, and then immediately broke them again, lol. :D They are adorable. I'm definitely enjoying the show more than I thought I would, even though I expected more time machine shenanigans in the latest plotline, but my guess as to what had happened was completely wrong, lol. :D Overall, now that I'm about halfway through: I find some of the show a bit preachy, but not overly so. It hasn't turned me off yet. Most of it is just fun, and I find it surprisingly engaging! It's on viki.

I watched four more episodes of The Cross-Dressed Union, now on 22/24. It really is a fun watch, and even the grasslands sidequest was kind of satisfyingly resolved and integrated into the rest of the plot. I was surprised. Sadly, I then lost track of it, I really should just finish it, there's not much left. I definitely rec it. It's on youtube.

Three eps of Bridgerton Season 4! Watchalonging this, and we're all caught up now for the second part of the season. I loved the Queen in ep2! I didn't expect them to make her this obvious. Her reaction to Agatha's announcement in ep1 was pretty obvious to me, but seeing it play out like that was *chef's kiss* and made me cry. For some reason, I'm not really invested in Violet's storyline anymore this season? I liked it better last season. But her line in ep4 was hilarious, I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. :D My favorite character continues to be Penelope. <3 Sophie is starting to grow on me, too. The cliffhanger after ep4 is painful, but I thought it was quite logical. I have no complaints, really.

Two eps of Our Times (05/38), the 90s retro "IT students go professional" cdrama with Wu Lei and Hou Minghao. I still just find Wu Lei and Hou Minghao in (ugly!) period dress and hairstyle very very adorable. The bromance vibes are through the roof. So far, all lead characters are being trodden on repeatedly, to really firmly establish their underdog status. I'm sure that'll change throughout the show, but for now, this is exactly my thing. The embarrassment squick is relatively strong so far, but I made it through and am confident I will continue to do so. (I now have an active icon for it. That escalated quickly. :D). It's on wetv and youtube.

TV (dropped)

Nothing, I hope?

Shows for which I have fewer than 5 eps left but haven't watched a single one all month: The Long Ballad (1) and Love on the Turquoise Land (4). /o\

Rewatches/Watchalongs

The Nothing But You watchalong is now on ep 20. \o/ Enjoying the hell out of this watchalong.

Bridgerton season 4 hasn't gripped me. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not watching it on my own, or if it's the show itself. Who knows. We do both enjoy it, though.

The When A Snail Falls in Love watchalong is now done! \o/ The last episode was actually a little better than I'd feared. I don't regret watching it. We have now also started Nothing But You, I can never watch that too many times. <3

Gracie got me up at 7:30 AM. I guess that I should be grateful for the extra 30 minutes.

Lily is so pretty and delicate. I love looking at her. Appearances can be deceiving though; she’ll smack Oliver, who usually deserves it.

Gracie doesn’t want to come in. At least, I got Bella in.

Booked a hair appointment. Ordered another stock.

I'm feeling like staying home today, but I have stuff on Facebook Marketplace to buy. I'll see how I feel after my nap and shower. The clock is a long drive away, but the nail gun is local.

Got Gracie in with the aid of a munchie bone. Now she’s eating Bella’s food. That’s okay; it’s the same food.

Napped. Oliver Snugglebug is snuggling. Had lunch. I think that I want another nap.

Gracie likes to nuzzle my ear for reasons known only to her.

Napped. I’m in the kitchen trying to wake up. Then a shower. I’ve decided that I’m going to stay in and work on the bathroom.

Showered. I’m wearing a pants and sweatshirt set that I bought a while ago. It’s like sweats but a thinner and nicer fabric.

Lily is parading around in my face, purring. (The cat food dishes are soaking.) My pets keep me grounded in the now.

Reading news on Iran. Sigh. On a happier note, the BBC had an article about Madeira, to which I’d like to go.

Hmm. Snow tonight.

You know that you’re getting old when you don’t recognize half the actors’ names in the Actors Awards.

Did a little work on the bathroom. Found a gazillon socks. But I want to get to bed early.

Book: Two Women Living Together

IMG_1516 Two Women Living Together: The Bestselling Korean Memoir
Kim Hana, Kim Sunwoo, Gene Png (translator)
Amazon Product Link

The big-hearted, bestselling South Korean memoir co-written by two best friends flouting gender norms and societal expectations with their decision to grow old together under one roof.

When most of their peers were moving in with romantic partners and having children, Kim Hana and Hwang Sunwoo chose independence—savoring solitude, quiet mornings, and the unmitigated freedom of living alone. But in their forties, something shifted, and they were met with a new, unexpected loneliness. Refusing to settle for the outdated choice between marriage or isolation, Hana and Sunwoo made a radical decision: to buy a home and live together—not as lovers, not as roommates, but as chosen family.

Now a bustling household of two women and four cats, Hana and Sunwoo still value solitude, but can do so while sharing a life and its meaning with someone else. Together they navigate the challenges and comforts of cohabiting in midlife, the growing pains of interdependence and the unexpected rewards of compromise when you’ve grown set in your ways. From sick days to career wins to aging parents and beach-side retirement plans, they are redefining domestic bliss on their own terms, where love, partnership, and home are defined not by tradition, but by choice.

With warmth, wit, and sharp social insight, Hana and Sunwoo share their blueprint for building a life outside the scripts of marriage and society’s expectations for women. Two Women Living Together is a quiet revolution—a celebration of female friendship, community, and the many forms that love and family can take.

I was in a reading slump and then saw this book - sort of resonated with what I had been thinking about, so gave it a go.

This book is comprised of (almost) alternating essays, Hana’s and Sunwoo’s point of views.

I really enjoyed the sometimes self-deprecating parts of the essays (both authors). I kind of think I’m like Sunwoo, a little bit messy, but I’m also a bit like Hana, “tools have their own place.”

I wonder if further along the way, will I find a nice housemate or will I be living alone?

Daily Life Meanders On

Lily's affection is a little self-serving. She is very lovey-dovey when she wants food. Oliver, on the other hand, likes snuggles.

Woke up at 9:30 AM.

I bought a Black and Decker drill on Amazon plus screwdriver bits. I also signed up for an Udemy course on using a drill. Might as well learn to use it right!

The dogs don’t want to come in. Sigh. I really want to take a nap.

I’ve decided that I want “Time to Say Goodbye” played at my memorial service. (I’ve been planning it and will put instructions in my NokBox.) That song has been haunting me since the Olympics. And it has Italian in it!

Finally got the dogs in and fed us all. Nap time. Gracie: Bark bark bark bark. (Cat cat cat cat!) Me: Gracie, yes I know. Shut up!

Bella likes the larger Milkbones. I was leaving the box open for her to get them at will, but she’s eating too many of them. I need to stash them away. Somewhere. It’s a big box.

Hmm. I’m looking at Grand Prairie Friends for volunteering. But I need to wait and see if I hear back from the Humane Society and Park District before applying for something else.

Ate lunch. AccuWeather says that rain will start in two minutes. I want another nap. Overslept my nap.

I’m in shock over the strikes on Iran. We’ve messed with Iran before, and that didn’t go well, so let’s do it again! Plus, what happened with consulting with Congress? We already know that Trump thinks that he can do whatever whenever, but this is the most serious thing yet. (I had to dig for my outrage though because I mostly feel numb. My mom would be screaming though.)

Fed us all. Daily life meanders on. I want to go to bed early.

Don't Wanna. But It's Fun.

I also applied to volunteer for the Urbana Park District.

My Apple Watch found my iPhone. That was useful.

Overslept until 8 AM. Hustled my butt into the shower because I want to go to the bank at lunchtime. Oliver and Lily attended my shower.

I bought some Birdie and Louie cat food for Zara. I hope that she likes it. She's been picking at her food.

It looks like the police was doing a welfare check on my elderly neighbor. I hope that he's okay.

Got the dogs in. I just need to feed the cats at lunchtime, and then I can run to the bank (done). I also got two rolls of quarters in case I need to go to the laundromat, although I really want to get the washer fixed this weekend.

Received the gate for Zara's room.

I found an end table on Amazon that’s cheap and I like better than the Facebook Marketplace one. I just need to check the chair to see if I should get brown or black. Actually I bought the brown one to match the bookcases.

Well hmmm. I found a lamp and a washable rug on Amazon, so I won’t need to buy the ones on Facebook Marketplace. I just need to buy the clock. Oh, and the nail gun.

Holy cow. I’ve made over $8000 on stocks, and I haven’t been investing that long.

Oy. Someone (Bella, I’m looking at you) stole and ate my apple fritter. I was scolding her about that when she stole a hot pad that I put under my food. Sneaky, cheeky dog.

My singing lesson went well. My teacher is a great combination of exacting and fun. It’s funny that I get a case of the “don’t wannas” before my singing lesson and choir, but I really enjoy the singing once I start. Well, I get a case of the “don’t wannas” about almost everything besides eating and sleeping.

I need a drill and am trying to decide whether to get a used one or not.

I previously bought a dry-erase board for the refrigerator, but I kept on knocking it down and its frame came off. I ordered a thin dry-erase surface, and that looks like it’ll work better. And I also ordered a thin dry-erase calendar for the fridge. I’ll use it to track the time that I’m spending on the house.

Fed us all. I'm trying to decide whether to research more stocks or just go to bed.

1. What made you happy this week?
I got some new ideas on pottery pieces to make!

2. What made you sad?
My car park cats went missing very suddenly. Though after 2 full days of disappearance, today one of the Mama cats came out again. So I fed just this Mama cat. My sis thinks it's spring and probably the cats have dispersed to mate or something, and since Mama cat is with kittens she didn't go hiding? (at least, we think so, she has a huge belly) I can now touch this Mama cat when I'm preparing her food, but outside of this interaction, she doesn't let me hold her at all. I've been seriously considering doing a private TNR type of thing for the car park cats, but the cats still do not let me carry them.

3. What made you angry?
oh my previous post - the ongoing bickering between mom and sis. It's a simple matter, no need to make so much fuss.

4. What are you looking forward to in the next week?
My sacred pottery time tomorrow.

5. What are you not looking forward to?
Nothing really, everything's looking to be going smoothly, I guess!

Eye-rollery and a work-hobby

I'm not trying to one-up my sis, but I was just so fed up with the nightly agitated half-discussions half-arguments with mom.

My sis is a little.... socially awkward and such and she works at a shelter. I'd guess she loves the job as she doesn't have to deal with a lot of humans.

So apparently the shelter has been owing her money for a while. She keeps saying it's fine that she's keeping track and that this month they've given her an astronomical amount of pay to her. Ping and pong with mom about the amounts, what is still owed, and such. She's confident that the shelter doesn't owe her anymore, mom is worried that she's being bullied, and every night it's the same fight, agitated half-screams.

My sis also is on the lazy side, or puts things off. For example, she'll promise that she will do this one thing. But then she's not going to do it now, because, it's dark. She'll do it tomorrow bright and early. And then tomorrow comes and she forgets or goes about doing other things. *shrugs* personality clash with me.

I was so fed up with listening to their bickering, I said just have 2 columns of what is supposed to be paid and what is paid, by month, and get the difference then you know, no need for long discussions. And then they both each hold a pen and pen paper and start saying things like "look, this payment is triple so it covers the past 3 months."

So. Secretary at work here. I took out my laptop, booted up excel, asked one question: "When have they started to short you your salary?" and she had a very resolute "2024 April". Started a spreadsheet starting with April 2024, looked at her pay slips and listed out every month what she's supposed to receive, then looked at her bank records.... there were no records of anything in 2024?

"Oh, i didn't update my passbook for too long, so the printing machine couldn't print so far back." Like it was the most natural thing in the world.

My blood pressure was seriously going up at this point. "I can't make any calculations if I don't have the figures. It's your salary, not mine, are you not worried about your salary?" and here mom chimes in to agree with me and such. Then I looked at her older bank records and noticed. "Why are the payroll items all irregular and so ridiculously low in 2023?"

"oh, they have also been delaying payments."

WTF. "So when did they START shorting your pay?" And she keeps quiet. She fucking doesn't know. WTF?

Her pile of pay slips go back till 2020, so I had to extend the records to 2020. Long story short, ignoring the inexistent figures of 2024, just between 2020 till 2023, they have shorted her almost 3 months pay. No figures in 2024 so I can't say, then 2025 also shorted her almost 3 months pay. And then this year 2026 they paid an astronimcal amount, saying all balance cleared, but after my calculations, it doesn't cover everything.

So today mom goes to the bank and gets her banking history for 2024 as well. And after I update the list, I have all the figures, and heh, Ok, they managed to short/delay her pay in 2020 but did settle the balance, but from 2021 up till now, even with the big amount today, they still owe her around 4 months of pay. All simply in less than 15minutes of actual work.

And to think mom has chosen to buy that I-don't-know-what-insurance-policy-that-can-only-have-one-beneficiary under my sis name because she trusts her enough that sis will share the funds with me in future. Geezus, I'm also confident my sis will not purposefully cheat me out of anything, I just don't have the confidence that she'll actually remember/claim in time or know to check the figures when the time comes.

oh, i must also pat myself on the back that THAT Excel spreadsheet is so beautifully crafted lol. The formulas and formatting are just on-point. A masterpiece lol. (I was mucking around and found an interesting function that I can in one click hide the monthly records and just show the aggregate annual, with the grouping function on a list using the subtotal formula. Whatever, that's just geeky talk.

(confession: when the company finance or accounts people send out spreadsheets and such I love clicking on every cell to check out the formula used and how to use these formulas for my own spreadsheets).

Similarly, I love to investigate Word functions as well lol.

Banner Day at Work

I applied to volunteer for Special Events for the Humane Society (fits better with my schedule, and I'm less likely to wind up with another pet) and an organization that provides books to prisoners, which is right up my alley. The books for prisoners people emailed me back right away.

Overslept until 7:45 AM. Today is a pajama day for me.

At work, the conversion to the new ticketing system seems to be going well.

The dogs wouldn’t come in until 11:15 AM.

I way overslept my nap at lunchtime.

The cats like the bed that I bought for the top of my desk upstairs. And I haven't even plugged it in yet! I need to rearrange stuff.

I need to log back on tonight to make up my nap time.

The lamp that I liked is pending sale, but I found another one that's similar. I need to figure out how much cash to get so that I can buy furniture this weekend. $185. I’ll need to break some bills. Oh, plus $15 for end table?

I got my new ergonomic keyboard. I need to set it up.

I screwed up and forgot to soak the cat dishes. Did so and fed Lily. Submitted a grocery list for tomorrow. Fed the rest of us.

Note to self: Scan music (done) and do French homework tonight. It turns out that I don't have French tomorrow, so while I started the homework, I'll finish it on the weekend.

I now own this...

In fact, I own two of them! I purchased a random LEGO Harry Potter minifigure from ebay, and it also wound up being this: Professor Sprout with mandrake. How cute is that?

It is, of course, all about the mandrake. Because I love absurdity. AND I just discovered that there is also a Sirius Black minifigure with ball and chain! Ahahahahaha!

After our random winter day last week (53o), we're now having more springlike weather. A little TOO springlike—Saturday's high is supposed to be 76o, which is awfully warm for the end of February. It makes me worry that the summer temps will come early, like in March or April. Please, no!

I finished Station Eternity recently, which was a fun read. It's a combination of comedy, mystery, and sci-fi. The main character is a young woman with an uncanny gift for solving murder mysteries, who notices that a LOT of those murders involve people who are somehow connected to her. She pleads with a sentient space station to grant her refuge, so she can get away from humanity and stop triggering more murders. There are only two other humans on the space station with her... until the station decides to invite a human contingent for a visit. More murder ensues!

I also finished T. Kingfisher's Hemlock and Silver, which is kind of a desert-based light fantasy with loose ties to the Snow White fairy tale. The main character is a poison expert, which is unusual. An enjoyable read over all. Someday, I'll get around to reading The Raven and the Reindeer, which I forgot I bought on Kindle at some point. This is good, as our county library still refuses to buy the digital version of it.

This weekend: I'll be building the coffee table, gathering some more items for Goodwill, and I might finish my pseudo-LEGO mini-brick Starry Night set! \o/

Grant Writing Classes

Feb. 25th, 2026 10:39 pm

[personal profile] days_unfolding
Ooh, I saw a floor lamp on Marketplace that I like for the library room. And a washable rug. Maybe I’ll go get them this weekend. And a Westminster chime clock (I had thought about a grandfather clock, but that would be a hassle to get here) and a basket for my meditation cushions. And a nail gun. I just bought safety glasses to use with the nail gun.

For some reason, my alarm didn’t go off, and I slept until 8:30 AM.

The dogs don't want to come in. I told them that I have a meeting and they'll be out a long time, but they don't care. They finally came in at lunchtime. Oddly, Gracie was more cooperative, and I had to get Bella by the collar to come in.

I'm looking at grant writing classes. A certificate at Parkland Community College is $2500, which is a lot, but I'll investigate payment plans.

Hmm. I should get a money belt for my trip in the fall because we will be traveling on trains a lot.

We had a mini-crisis at work because the library system that our libraries use went down. We had to scramble to respond. We're moving to a new ticketing system tomorrow, so I guess that was the last hurrah on the old system.

Piano class went well. Oliver and Zara settled down for a snooze while I played.

I’ve been busy canceling subscriptions bit by bit.

I really want to work on the library/music room (“Zara’s room “). I think that I’ll use it as a carrot to get stuff done on the rest of the place; if I spend X amount of time on the rest of the place, I can spend X time on the library room. I’m getting excited about it. Plus, getting that room together will move book boxes out of the rest of the place.

I found a cheaper version of the grant-writing courses. That will work.
