Not many, as writing and travel plans have pretty much taken over my life. Guess you can't have everything. *g* Still, some entertaining choices.

Movies seen in July

July 14 - Ring of Fire (2013)
This is the story of the decades-long love affair between June Carter and her husband, Johnny Cash, a love that was stretched to the breaking point by Johnny's addiction to pills.
Director: Allison Anders
Stars: Jewel Kilcher, Matt Ross, John Doe

Sort of convoluted, it never really does get on track. And while Carter stuck it out, you never get a real answer as to why.

July 19 - I Saw the Light (2015)
The story of the country-western singer Hank Williams, who in his brief life created one of the greatest bodies of work in American music. The film chronicles his rise to fame and its tragic effect on his health and personal life.
Director: Marc Abraham
Stars: Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Olsen, Maddie Hasson, Bradley Whitford

Another Country Western bio, this time about one of my favorite CW singers. Hiddleston does a fantastic job with the singing, but, from what I remember, “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” with George Hamilton as Williams, was a far better movie.

July 21 - Experimenter (2015)
In 1961, famed social psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted a series of radical behavior experiments that tested ordinary humans' willingness to obey authority.
Director: Michael Almereyda
Stars: John Palladino, Anthony Edwards, Jim Gaffigan, Winona Ryder

An intriguing experiment that brought out some disturbing truths about people. The movie is well done, sort of half docudrama, half straight drama.

A slight connection to Star Trek. The docudrama The Tenth Level, which was based on these experiments, starred William Shatner.

July 25 - Murderous Intent aka Like Minds (2006)
A forensic psychologist (Collette) is tasked with determining whether or not a minor should face murder charges for killing his schoolmate.
Director: Gregory Read
Stars: Eddie Redmayne, Tom Sturridge, Toni Collette

Even at this early an age, Redmayne is fantastic. An odd, disturbing movie.

July 29 - 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
After getting in a car accident, a woman is held in a shelter with two men, who claim the outside world is affected by a widespread chemical attack.
Director: Dan Trachtenberg
Stars: John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher Jr.

Actually quite good. I love that you don’t know until almost near the end what’s really going on.

July 30 - A Dangerous Method (2011)
A look at how the intense relationship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud gives birth to psychoanalysis.
Director: David Cronenberg
Stars: Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen

Strange movie. Watching Fassbender spank Knightley, who is dressed in little more than a corset, is totally weird.

Ha, ha, the mind of a Trekker! When you mentioned that experiment, I remembered that William Shatner was part of a drama about it before I read that you did, too. :)

Lol, how could we not know about it? I've actually seen it, though it was years ago. Quite well done for its time.

Years ago I used to be fairly knowledgeable about films but I've not heard of any of these so I'm grateful to you for posting these reviews. I thought the last film, A Dangerous Method, might have appealed to me but on reading watching Fassbender spank Knightley, who is dressed in little more than a corset I don't think it's my cup of tea!

Thanks a lot.

It's a strange movie, but it did have its moments. And I did learn a bit about Jung and Freud, though how close to the truth all this is is anyone's guess. Still, not a bad movie.

A lot of these movies I find because they're previewed on another movie. From one movie I might see three or four previews that look interesting. Of course, not all of them are, but it's amazing how many really good movies get so little publicity.

Glad you like the reviews, and that they actually help!

What a great assortment of movies. I love that you wander off the path of popular mainstream movies. Thanks for your comments. I'm going to have to check a couple out.

I rarely get to the theatre anymore, so I end up having to wait for them to be available from the library. In the meanwhile, there are so many movies out there that get so little publicity; the only place one sees about them are from the previews shown on other movies.

Glad I can be of help!

TBH, the (movie) theater is a huge waste of time these days. We average maybe one/two movies a year. These are pretty cool sounding, though. I've seen a couple Hank Williams movies and have liked them.

Oh, I'd love to go to the theater more than I do. I especially love the popcorn there. It's setting it up, your schedule having to synch with whoever else is going. For some reason, that's a big problem. So, I'll continue to watch at home. :-)

I'm a matinee kinda girl and TBG likes evenings. Yeah, it's a bit of a renegotiation when we actually find a movie we both want to see.

Sounds like an interesting batch this month - I really should watch more films (and especially go to the cinema more, which I still love!)

And an extra hurrah for travel planning! *g*

I love going to the cinema, though, unfortunately, most of the movies I see are at home. But a movie is a movie, right? *g*

Getting closer and closer every day!
