I’m much happier in my marriage since I fell out of love with my husband.

I enjoyed the voicemail secrets. I think I’ll call my son today.

Classic Secrets

Dear Frank,

The other day I was using a search engine to try to find an old secret that I had found very moving. While looking through the images I found a link to a blog containing my secret that I had sent in a little over year ago. My secret was: “being able to survive it doesn’t mean it was ever ok…”

The person wrote the following in reaction to my secret: “This quote, part of a PostSecret postcard this week, has been resonating within me since I read it. It makes me want to cry. And scream. And laugh. And it makes me angry. And it comforts me that somewhere out there someone feels the same way.”

The meaning has changed since I originally wrote it. At the time I was angry because people seemed to think that surviving meant beating it; they didn’t recognize that it was a struggle I was still enduring. Those who knew what I was going through praised me for surviving it or said they were sorry for what I went through. I didn’t want praise or pity, I needed support because it was a battle I was still fighting.

When I originally saw my secret posted on your Web site I suppose I thought I was going to find closure. Yet the real closure came a year later in this response. I had the support I needed all along in the heart of a stranger.

Thank you,
Heather

In an Effort to Palate Cleanse After Today ...

... it's the return of the Music Meme ...

... and it's Day 17.

A song about being 17:

Oh, was there ever going to be any other song?

Even though I first heard the song well after I left 17 behind, Janis Ian's song spoke to me in a general sense. I understood it, even though I hadn't suffered what she undoubtedly suffered during her own school days. I'd suffered smaller heartbreaks in high school, for the crime of being weird. Besides, her writing was beautiful. So of course, I loved it. Teenagers have it tough, y'all.

Years later, I learned she was a science fiction fan, and she wrote a song about that, and put it to the music for "At Seventeen." Here it is. (I don't know if it was written for SFWA, or for the Nebula Awards; Geri, if you're out there, can you tell me? It was the title of her rewritten song, "Welcome Home," which she repeats more than once in the lyrics, that hit me harder than "At Seventeen" ever did. That's what I felt when I discovered SFF fandom; I'd found a home.

Even later, I had the chance to listen to her live when she played a gig in Evanston. Afterwards, I spoke briefly to her about how much I loved that, especially the mention of Cordwainer Smith, one of my favorite weirdly beautiful writers. It turns out that she was also a Smith fan. That was as much a gift to me as "Welcome Home" was

War with Venezuela

I got up this morning, my milk had gone sour so I had some cheese and crackers, and my coffee, then showered and dressed.

I went to my Al-snon meeting, and got there early for a change. The meeting was very good. I went to the diner afterward, driven by S as usual.

The Kid called me while we were there and told we we had invaded Venezuela and kidnapped their president and his wife. I am shocked and horrified. It's terrifying. We didn't talk about it much at the diner. I'm calling the Kid later to discuss it.

I had a bowl of cream of turkey soup and a cup of tea. Very tasty. After we were done, I took the bus home as usual.

Got home, my Amazon package had come. That's the two presents for RK, and the external cd/dvd player for my computer.

I went to the Starsky and Hutch episode watch and chat. and was in time to see about half the episode The Trap. Not one of the best, but fun. Then we chatted afterward until 6:00. We did not talk about Venezuela.

After that I read the instructions for the player, and downloaded VLC Media Player so I could use it. Then before I could experment it was time to Team the FWiB.

We talked for a very long time, over two hours. It was a lot of fun. We didn't talk much about Venezuela but we did talk some.

We got off and I had dinner, then reread the instructions for the dvd/cd player, got out the dvd I have of Knives Out, and hooked up the player and tried it out. It worked fine. By then it was after 10 though so I took out the dvd, and put the player away and fed the pets.

Then I started here, and that's all there is to say. I will call the Kid after I go to bed, and I will call [personal profile] mashfanficchick too.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My meetings and the people there.

3. The Kid.

4. The Starsky and Hutch fandom.

5. The new cd/dvd player seems to work well.

6. Got the presents for RK.

Christmas is mostly tucked away

I'm getting to do absolutely nothing. Was going out tonight with my brother and SiL. Now they're sick. Monday is going to be a good day travel wise but everything is closed. Sigh.

I really got nothing done today beyond packing away Christmas and working up one set of notes.

Today was weird. My sugar was in the 80s all morning and even after a pasta dinner it's only 116. Who knows with me

So just have some depressed offerings (which seems apropos of how horrible this year is starting politically)

I thought I outgrew this behavior a good two decades ago, but I guess illegal wars really get my dander up.

The conversation, such as it was, was long and pointless, but it did have this amusing, paraphrased exchange:

Them: I didn't say that you should say "ones of them", I just said that even though it sounds wrong it's technically grammatical! Go to ChatGPT, it'll tell you the same thing!

Me: No, it won't, here's the screenshot.

Them: Well! That doesn't count because it doesn't cite a rule! I did check before posting that you should go to ChatGPT, you know!

(They spontaneously claimed elsewhere that they understand the idea of descriptivist linguistics, but I think they don't understand how much of language has yet to be described, even in very well-studied languages like English.)

This poem is spillover from the June 6, 2023 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] mama_kestrel. It also fills the "Main character has to use odds and ends to fix a problem" square in my 6-1-23 card for the Kinky and Unusual Situations Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by a pool with [personal profile] fuzzyred. It belongs to Marionettes thread of the Polychrome Heroics series.

Warning: This poem contains intense and controversial topics. Highlight to read the warnings, some of which are spoilers. It includes reference to past injuries, reference to traumatic loss of teammates, volcanic activity, traumatic stress, human trafficking, surprise baby, moving to a new home, dramatic scars, attachment, and other challenges. If these are sensitive issues for you, please consider your tastes and headspace before reading onward.

The flaw may be fatal

I actually got started on my *brother's* project today! I started going through all the shit in the utility room. I'd really like to eliminate much and organize the rest. I thought I'd like to find a new/better home for the printer but now I'm thinking it's ok in there. But it needs more breathing room.

I have a bunch of shoebox size hard plastic boxes that are really frames with drawers and are wonderful for storing miscellaneous shit. I've had them for years and years. There are a bunch in the utility room and a bunch more in the bedroom closet.

My grand scheme is to empty out the storage unit. Toss 90% of that shit - put the 10% in the way back and then install shelves upon which all these plastic boxes will go. I think my plan will work. Christian thinks my plan will work. But I can't help but think there is some road block I am not considering.

Guess we'll find out next week.

The shelves I originally ordered (2 sets) came in a big box. Two smaller boxes in the big box. I needed to return them in that big box. But that box was too big for me to carry to the car. Too big to get into the car. So I took the two smaller boxes out, broke down the big box flat. Got it all into the car with everything else and headed out to UPS. It was pouring rain. I got the flat box and tape out of the car and took it inside and taped the flat back into a box. Then I dragged the two boxes into the store and onto the counter and the very very nice clerk helped me get it all back together again. It was pretty hilarious.

I was describing it at elbow coffee. Bonny said "SUSAN! My car is plenty big enough and you play your old lady card to get them to do the rest for you!" But my way was funnier.

Next up. Find my label maker. I know it's here somewhere.

Purple Carrot Meals!

I edited and posted my first week of vegan Purple Carrot meals -> here <-. I also tried putting in smoother transitions and also photoshopped a thumbnail to be more noticeable.

The quick sum up is that most of the meals were good, had a few flaws and needed some editing on many, though. My favorite was the one pot bolognese which the leftovers were also filling and delicious.

Next week's box that should come oh...maybe even tomorrow? More than likely on Monday, though, has more premade meals than meal kits since it'll be the first week back to work.
