OK, that looks suspiciously like a romance novel - what's it about?

The name Taylor Caldwell is vaguely familiar ...

It's about Pericles, the ancient Greece statesman, and Aspasia, the courtesan who became his love. So, yes, there is a love story involved, but I wouldn't call the book a romance novel.

Taylor Caldwell wrote a lot of well known books from the 40's through the 70's. Her most famous are probably The Earth is the Lord's, Captains and the Kings, Dialogues with the Devil, and Great Lion of God. My mother read a lot of her books, which is how I came to discover this one.

So is it good? Considering the example that Stephen Pressfield sets? :-) That's a high standard, I know, but ...

I have to admit, it's been so many years since I read it that I can't 100% say it is. I remember really liking it, but you know how it is, you read a book in your twenties and you think it's great. Then you read it again now and it's not so great. But considering how good a writer she was, I'm inclined to think that it was a good book, then and now, even if not to the Stephen Pressfield level. :-)

She was a pretty famous author in her her day. This is the only book of hers that I've read, though.

I used to read a lot of Taylor Caldwell novels. My mom, too.

Caldwell really didn't write in the romance genre. Her favorite time period was the first two decades of the 20th century and tended to be historical/political dramas..

Yeah, my mom was the one who read a lot of her books. I've only read this one, mainly because of the time in which it's set.

That's a very simple and intriguing cover.

Doesn't give much away, does it? *g* It's set in ancient Greece, and follows the lives of Pericles, the Greek statesman, and Aspacia, the courtesan he comes to love.
