I saw the movie of this years ago and to be honest couldn't fathom it. :-)

Oh, the movie was awful! I was so excited to hear that there had been a movie made based on one of my a favorite books. Boy, was a disappointed. It was a mess. It didn't make any sense at all, and the actors seem to be sleep-walking through it. The book is world's apart from it. If I were Wilson, I think I would have sued the movie company. Actually, even he found it incomprehensible.

I think the only other time I've been this disappointed in a movie made from a book was The Beast Master, based on the Andre Norton book of the same name.

And I wasn't exaggerating. The movie is a total mess. But, yes, the book was wonderful!
