World of Richard III

Richard III remains one of the most controversial rulers in history. Whether he was guilty of murdering his nephews or not is a mystery that perhaps will never be solved. Even the location of the battlefield, where, on 22 August 1485, Richard was struck down, has been a matter of debate. This book leads you on a journey through the landscape of Richard's time. Following Richard's trail, we visit resplendent castles, towering cathedrals, manor homes, and chapels associated with Richard. The Middle Ages come alive again as you visit Tewkesbury Abbey, where Richard helped his brother secure his throne. Witness the stunning vista of Wensleydale as you visit Middleham Castle, Richard's adopted childhood home. Each location is brought to life through engaging narrative, and an extensive collection of photographs, floor plans, and images.

A great book for the newly initiated into the Richard III persuasion. Probably every place that we know that Richard visited is covered. Some no longer stand, have been so reconstructed that anything Medieval has disappeared, or aren’t in England. Many, though, still stand, even if not as complete as they were in Richard’s time.

While placed chronologically, the locations are also grouped by area, making it easier to plan a visit. I’ve seen many of these places, but I still managed to pick up about a half dozen new places to add to my next visit’s itinerary.

That sounds good - and I suspect that praise from someone who enjoys Richard III the way you do, is praise indeed! I've always meant to find out more about him, maybe this is the book to start with!

PS - glad to hear you're planning the next trip already! *g*

This is very much a good book to start your journey...in more ways than one. *g* Not only does it tell you about all the places that were part of his life, how to get there, and the hours and days it's open, but it also gives you a good background story as to why these places were part of his life: what went on there, his approximate age when he was there, and a brief history of the place.
