gilda_eliseActually managed to watch quite a few this month. It's one thing good that came out of the pandemic. So many new movies available to watch through streaming.
MOVIES WATCHED IN MAY
May 5 - I Care A Lot (2020)
A crooked legal guardian who drains the savings of her elderly wards meets her match when a woman she tries to swindle turns out to be more than she first appears.
Director: J Blakeson
Stars: Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage, Eiza González, Dianne Wiest
I guess what is says is that money talks. A strange, though rather good, movie.
May 12-13 - The Crime of the Century(2021)
A searing indictment of Big Pharma and the political operatives and government regulations that enable over-production, reckless distribution and abuse of synthetic opiates.
Director: Alex Gibney
Stars: Patrick Keefe, Lenny Bernstein, Gary Blinn
Again, it’s amazing what money can do. So many lives ruined, and the company gets away almost Scott free.
May 15 - The Dig (2021)
An archaeologist embarks on the historically important excavation of Sutton Hoo in 1938.
Director: Simon Stone
Stars: Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James
Much more interesting than I thought it would be. Fiennes, especially, does a great job of bringing his character to life. Based on a real event.
May 16 - Stowaway (2021)
A three-person crew on a mission to Mars faces an impossible choice when an unplanned passenger jeopardizes the lives of everyone on board.
Director: Joe Penna
Stars: Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, Shamier Anderson, Toni Collette
A basically good movie, though I thought the plot leaned to heavily on “anything that can go wrong, will.”
May 19 - The Woman In the Window (2021)
An agoraphobic woman living alone in New York begins spying on her new neighbors, only to witness a disturbing act of violence.
Director: Joe Wright
Stars: Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, Julianne Moore, Wyatt Russell
An excellent movie. Adams shines in a totally different role for her.
May 28 - Black Panther (2018)
T'Challa, heir to the hidden but advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must step forward to lead his people into a new future and must confront a challenger from his country's past.
Director: Ryan Coogler
Stars: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker
I was disappointed in the movie. I’d heard so much about it, all the raves, plus I love to see Boseman, I guess I was expecting more. It’s good, but not great. I didn’t think there was enough character development.
May 30 - Doctor Sleep (2019)
Years following the events of The Shining (1980), a now-adult Dan Torrance must protect a young girl with similar powers from a cult known as The True Knot, who prey on children with powers to remain immortal.
Director: Mike Flanagan
Stars: Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Kyliegh Curran
I still haven’t read the book, so I don’t know how close it’s followed, but it’s quite good. Not scary, but disturbing. McGregor is excellent.
May 31 - Carriers (2009)
As a lethal virus spreads globally, four friends seek a reputed plague-free haven. But while avoiding the infected, the travelers turn on one another.
Director David Pastor, Alex Pastor
Stars: Chris Pine, Piper Perabo, Lou Taylor Pucci, Emily VanCamp
Definitely timely, and not a zombie in sight! I could definitely see people acting to the lowest common denominator. A good movie.
