Sep. 10th, 2021 11:05 amI decided to give my crushes a break, mainly because other movies 🍿 were piling up.
MOVIES WATCHED IN AUGUST
Aug 5 - Love and Mercy (2014)
In the 60s, Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson struggles with emerging psychosis as he attempts to craft his avant-garde pop masterpiece. In the 80s, he is a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist Dr. Eugene Landy.
Director: Bill Pohlad
Stars: John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Giamatti
Interesting, though somewhat disjointed as it jumps around in time. Still worth watching.
Aug 6 - The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019)
A modern take on Charles Dickens's classic tale of a young orphan who is able to triumph over many obstacles.
Director: Armando Iannucci
Stars: Dev Patel, Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton
Different, as it tells the story of David Copperfield as if he had written it. As always, Dev Patel is excellent.
Aug 7 - How It Ends (2018)
In the midst of an apocalypse, a man struggles to reach his pregnant wife, who is thousands of miles away.
Director: David M. Rosenthal
Stars: Theo James, Kat Graham, Nancy Sorel, Forest Whitaker
Harrowing tale as the protagonist makes his way home. Well done.
Aug 14 - Dream Girls (2006)
A trio of black female soul singers cross over to the pop charts in the early 1960s, facing their own personal struggles along the way.
Director: Bill Condon
Stars: Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, Jennifer Hudson
Not as good as I thought it would be, but not bad. The music is, naturally, the best part.
Aug 19 - The Book of Henry (2017)
With instructions from her genius son's carefully crafted notebook, a single mother sets out to rescue a young girl from the hands of her abusive stepfather.
Director: Colin Trevorrow
Stars: Niomi Watts, Jaeden Martell, Jacob Tremblay, Sarah Silverman, Dean Norris
Really lovely story. Sorrowful, yet ultimately uplifting.
Aug 20 - Reminiscence (2021)
Nick Bannister, a private investigator of the mind, navigates the alluring world of the past when his life is changed by new client Mae. A simple case becomes an obsession after she disappears and he fights to learn the truth about her.
Director: Lisa Joy
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton
Great story. A love story, a mystery, and a cautionary tale all in one. Jackman is exceptional.
