Ramses the Great has awakened in Edwardian London. Having drunk the elixir of life, he is now Ramses the Damned, doomed forever to wander the earth, desperate to quell hungers that can never be satisfied. Although he pursues voluptuous aristocrat Julie Stratford, the woman for whom he desperately longs is Cleopatra. And his intense longing for her, undiminished over the centuries, will force him to commit an act that will place everyone around him in the gravest danger.
Rice writes a good story, but I wish she didn’t veer so close to Harlequin-type characters. Julie is beyond gorgeous and, though supposedly strong, is indecisive, and relies too much on the men in her life. Ramses is, of course, very good-looking, with a body that just won’t quit. Yet he turns out to be as indecisive as Julie. Gods on the outside, dorks on the inside.
The plot of the book is actually pretty good, though while there’s quite a bit of murder, there’s very little real horror. If you’re looking for a book that will keep you up at night, this isn’t it.
Unfortunately, like her other series, Rice begins to pull other characters into the same situation. Eventually there were at least a dozen vampires in her vampire series. Here, you can see that eventually there are going to be an awfully lot of immortals if given enough time. But only one sequel has been written, so we’ll never know. Will I read the sequel? I’m not sure.
