Some movies, but several miniseries, too, this time. There just seemed to have been so many recently, and I really needed to catch up. The date shown is the date I viewed the last episode.

MOVIES WATCHED IN JUNE

June 1 - The Favourite (2018)
In early 18th century England, a frail Queen Anne occupies the throne and her close friend, Lady Sarah, governs the country in her stead. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah.
Director: Yorgos Lanthimos
Stars: Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Mark Gatiss

I didn’t realize that the movie was something of a comedy, but I still liked it. And it’s piqued my interest about Queen Anne.

June 4 - Chernobyl (2019)
Five episodes. In April 1986, an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics becomes one of the world's worst man-made catastrophes.
Creator: Craig Mazin
Stars: Jessie Buckley, Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson

What a total cluster f**k. It’s hard to imagine how close they came to making a large part of Europe radioactive. The series is serious, hard-hitting and totally engrossing. Jared Harris was great in his role as Legasov.

June 6 - Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Decades after her original visit, the magical nanny returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael's children through a difficult time in their lives.
Director: Rob Marshall
Stars: Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury

Pretty good, though they can’t complain about Dick Van Dyke’s cockney accent anymore; Miranda’s was almost as bad. And while the special effect were, of course, much better than the originals, Blunt’s voice is a pretty distant second to Julie Andrew’s.

June 13 - Aquaman (2018)
Arthur Curry, the human-born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, goes on a quest to prevent a war between the worlds of ocean and land.
Director: James Wan
Stars: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren

Not bad. Not great, maybe not even good, but not bad.

June 14 - Mark Felt (2017)
The story of Mark Felt, who under the name "Deep Throat" helped journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncover the Watergate scandal in 1972.
Director: Peter Landesman
Stars: Liam Neeson, Diane Lane, Marton Csokas, Michael C. Hall, Tom Sizemore

Another really engrossing movie. I liked that you got to see the other side of the story, not just the one from the journalists. Guy had a lot of courage.

June 19 - Les Miserablés (2018)
Six episodes. Television adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel, which follows Jean Valjean as he evades capture by the unyielding Inspector Javert. Set against a backdrop of post-Napoleonic France as unrest begins to grip the city of Paris once more.
Stars: Dominic West, David Oyelowo, Adeel Akhtar, Emma Fielding

Very well done, and probably the closest adaption of the book I’ve seen. The cast is superb.

June 20 - Vice (2018)
The story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that we still feel today.
Director: Adam McKay
Stars: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell

Sort of strange, but I learned a lot about Cheney that I didn’t know. Recommended.

June 21 - Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool (2017)
A romance sparks between a young actor and a Hollywood leading lady.
Director: Paul McGuigan
Stars: Annette Bening, Jamie Bell, Kenneth Cranham, Vanessa Redgrave

Based on a true story, it took a bit for me to get into it,. Eventually I did and enjoyed the rest of the movie.

June 23 - The Hot Zone (2019)
Six episodes. The terrifying story of the first outbreak of Ebola in the U.S..
Creators: James V. Hart, Brian Peterson, Kelly Souders
Stars: Julianna Margulies, Noah Emmerich, Topher Grace, Liam Cunningham

I read the book by Richard Preston years ago and found it disturbing. The series is, too, as it recounts, not just the path of the disease, but the lives of those who fought it. Very well done.

June 30 - The Spanish Princess (2019)
Sixteen episodes. The beautiful Spanish princess, Catherine of Aragon, navigates the royal lineage of England with an eye on the throne.
Stars: Charlotte Hope, Ruairi O'Connor, Aaron Cobham, Laura Carmichael

Well done as far as the writing and acting, but, boy, did they ever muck around with history. Only eight episodes have been shown, with the other eight to be released next year.
