Movie Time!

January seems to have made up for the dearth of movies in November and December.

MOVIES IN JANUARY

Jan 1 - Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)
Rey develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Luke Skywalker, who is unsettled by the strength of her powers. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares for battle with the First Order.
Director: Rian Johnson
Stars: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Laura Dern

I enjoyed this second installment of the last trilogy much better than I did the previous one. The characters are more rounded out, plus the addition of Po added a lot, in my opinion.

Jan 9 - Aliens (1986)
57 years later, Ellen Ripley is rescued by a deep salvage team during her hypersleep. The moon from the original movie has been colonized, but contact is lost. This time, colonial marines have impressive firepower, but will that be enough?
Director: James Cameron
Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Carrie Henn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton

This is a movie I always enjoy. While the first movie grabbed you by the throat, the addition of humor makes this one easier to watch. And the addition of Michael Biehn certainly didn’t hurt.

Jan 11 - Black Butterfly (2017)
Outside a mountain town grappling with a series of abductions and murders, Paul (Antonio Banderas), a reclusive writer, struggles to start what he hopes will be a career-saving screenplay. After a tense encounter at a diner with a drifter named Jack (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), Paul offers Jack a place to stay-and soon the edgy, demanding Jack muscles his way into Paul's work and the two men begin a jagged game of one-upmanship that will bring at least one tale to an end.
Director: Brian Goodman
Stars: Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Piper Perabo

This movie goes nowhere fast…and then goes even more nowhere faster! Slow and weird.

Jan 12 - Lady Macbeth (2016)
In 19th-century rural England, a young bride who has been sold into marriage discovers an unstoppable desire within herself as she enters into an affair with a worker on her estate.
Director: William Oldroyd
Stars: Florence Pugh, Cosmo Jarvis, Paul Hilton

I’m not sure why they used this as a title, as their is no co-conspirator “Lord Macbeth.” Or maybe there is, but it isn’t her husband. I guess the moral of the story is what goes around comes around. But the ending left a lot to be desired.

Jan 12 - The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
A remake of the 1951 classic science fiction film about an alien visitor and his giant robot counterpart who visit Earth.
Director: Scott Derrickson
Stars: Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, Jaden Smith, John Cleese, Jon Hamm, Kyle Chandler

My opinion of this movie has mellowed with time. While I still don’t think it holds a candle to the original (and I could easily strangle the Smith character,) it’s not as bad as I remembered.

Jan 13 - The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
An alien lands and tells the people of Earth that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets.
Director: Robert Wise
Stars: Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, Frances Bavier

A true classic that I return to often, and especially after watching the remake. I fell in love with Michael Rennie when I was five or six when the movie was shown on tv. Or maybe it was Klaatu. Or both. *g* In any event, this is one movie I never tire of.

Jan 17 - Teenage Rebel (1956)
Nancy Fallon gets custody of her teenage daughter Dodie back from her ex-husband when she remarries but she must win her love.
Director: Edmund Goulding
Stars: Ginger Rogers, Michael Rennie, Mildred Natwick

Not half bad, considering. And seeing Michael Rennie dance (he’s surprisingly light on his feet, considering his height,) was more than worth the price of admission.

Jan 17 - Bright (2017)
Set in a world where fantasy creatures live side by side with humans. A human cop is forced to work with an Orc to find a weapon everyone is prepared to kill for.
Director: David Ayer
Stars: Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace

I thought this was going to be a Netflix series. It certainly could be, since there are a lot of loose ends, not to mention a somewhat surprising revelation.

Jan 20 - The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017)
The world's top bodyguard gets a new client, a hit man who must testify at the International Criminal Court. They must put their differences aside and work together to make it to the trial on time.
Director: Patrick Hughes
Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Salma Hayek

Anything with Ryan Reynolds and I’m there. Well, maybe not anything. Anyway, I really liked this one. Reynolds and Jackson are exceptional, especially when playing off each other. And Hayek is crazy…in a funny sort of way.

Jan 25 - Aftermath (2017)
Two strangers' lives become inextricably bound together after a devastating plane crash.
Director: Elliott Lester
Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Scoot McNairy, Maggie Grace

The movie made me wonder if any relatives of crash victims have ever gone after whoever they think is at fault, if their demands for wanting someone to take responsibility hide a darker truth. It also shows that we often get more than we bargained for, and that revenge is rarely a good idea. All in all, a pretty good movie.

Jan 29 - Solace (2015)
A psychic works with the F.B.I., in order to hunt down a serial killer.
Director: Afonso Poyart
Stars: Anthony Hopkins, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Abbie Cornish, Colin Farrell, Janine Turner

Lots of plot twists and turns. One I saw coming, but several I didn’t. And I find that I prefer Hopkins as a good guy, which he is here. A good, solid movie.
