Back to the Movies!
May. 4th, 2017 10:38 amNot a lot of movies, but some really good ones. And some relatively new ones.
APRIL
Apr 6 - My Boy Jack (2007)
Author Rudyard Kipling and his wife search for their 18-year-old son after he goes missing during World War I.
Director: Brian Kirk
Stars: David Haig, Daniel Radcliffe, Kim Cattrall, Carey Mulligan
One of the most futile of wars, yet men still avidly encouraged their sons to enlist. Men who should have known better. A tragic story, all the way around.
Apr 6 - Genius (2016)
A chronicle of Max Perkins's time as the book editor at Scribner, where he oversaw works by Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and others.
Director: Michael Grandage, Laura Linney
The movie focuses on Perkin’s relationship with Wolfe, who comes across as more than strange. The movie, itself, is somewhat odd, too.
Apr 8 - The Girl On the Train (2016)
A divorcee becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send shockwaves throughout her life.
Director: Tate Taylor
Stars: Emily Blunt, Haley Bennett, Rebecca Ferguson, Allison Janney, Lisa Kudrow
I think they did a good job bringing the book to the screen. The movie starts slow, as time is given to flesh out the three women characters. But once it got going, I really enjoyed the movie.
Apr 12 - Snowden (2016)
The NSA's illegal surveillance techniques are leaked to the public by one of the agency's employees, Edward Snowden, in the form of thousands of classified documents distributed to the press.
Director: Oliver Stone
Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Nicolas Cage
There was a lot I already knew about the situation, but the movie brought out much that I didn’t. Snowden’s a hero. I don’t care what the government says.
Apr 13 - The Accountant (2016)
As a math savant uncooks the books for a new client, the Treasury Department closes in on his activities and the body count starts to rise.
Director: Gavin O'Connor
Stars: Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, John Lithgow, Jean Smart
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Affleck does a great job as his characters slowly opens up to emotion.
Apr 13 - Backtrack (2015)
Psychologist Peter Bower's life is thrown into turmoil when he discovers a strange secret about his patients. Risking his own sanity, Peter delves into his past to uncover a terrifying secret which only he can put right. But is the reward worth risking more than a single life?
Director: Michael Petroni
Stars: Adrien Brody, Jenni Baird, Bruce Spence, Sam Neill
The movie is slow to start, but once it takes off, watch out. It definitely kept me guessing.
Apr 26 - Arrival (2016)
When twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world, linguistics professor Louise Banks is tasked with interpreting the language of the apparent alien visitors.
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Stars: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker
The movie jumps around in time, and sometimes what happened when is readily apparent, but a good, solid movie, nevertheless.
