Even while on vacation, I managed to take in several movies. New ones, too!

MARCH

Mar 1 - A Hologram For the King (2016)
A failed American sales rep looks to recoup his losses by traveling to Saudi Arabia and selling his company's product to a wealthy monarch.
Director: Tom Tykwer
Stars: Tom Hanks, Sarita Choudhury, Ben Whishaw, Tom Skerritt

Somewhat short, but I liked it, anyway. Sort of a slice of life, even if it’s complicated by its location.

Mar 8 - A Dog’s Purpose (2017)
A dog looks to discover his purpose in life over the course of several lifetimes and owners.
Director: Lasse Hallström
Stars: Josh Gad, Dennis Quaid, Peggy Lipton

If you’ve ever loved a dog, you’ll love this movie. There are some sad scenes, but the movie is basically upbeat.

Mar 12 - Manchester By the Sea (2016)
A depressed uncle is asked to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy's father dies.
Director: Kenneth Lonergan
Stars: Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler

A good movie, but something of a downer. And lots of unexpected events and outcomes.

Mar 13 - The Lego Batman Movie (2017)
Bruce Wayne must not only deal with the criminals of Gotham City, but also the responsibility of raising a boy he adopted.
Director: Chris McKay
Stars: Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes, Zack Galicianakis, Conan O’Brien, Billy Dee Williams, Eddie Izzard

Absolutely loved this, though not at all how I see Dick Grayson!

Mar 15 - The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Jack Hall, paleoclimatologist, must make a daring trek across America to reach his son, trapped in the cross-hairs of a sudden international storm which plunges the planet into a new Ice Age.
Director: Roland Emmerich
Stars: Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emmy Rossum, Sela Ward, Ian Holm

I’ve always liked this movie, and have seen it several times over the years, but my sister has only recently been introduced to the charms of Mr. Gyllenhaal. So, relaxing in a hotel room in Rimrock, Arizona, we ate popcorn and watched this movie.

Mar 24 - Deepwater Horizon (2016)
A dramatization of the April 2010 disaster, when the offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon exploded and created the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
Director: Peter Berg
Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Douglas M. Griffin, Gina Rodriguez, John Malkovich, Kate Hudson

As if I needed another reason to hate an oil company, this film certainly gives you one. I just wish that, honoring at the end all who died, that they would have mentioned all the people whose livelihoods were affected, and all the animals that died.

Mar 30 - The Light Between Oceans (2016)
A lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia raise a baby they rescue from a drifting rowing boat.
Director: Derek Cianfrance
Stars: Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Rachel Weisz, Bryan Brown

I think I enjoyed the movie a bit more than I did the book, which is saying a lot. Very well done.
