Oh my gosh. I feel SURE I read this a billion years ago. I remember nothing about it but the title.

It's been a long time since I read it, too, but it made quite an impression. It was the first time I'd run across the idea that our entire evolution is locked up in our brains, starting with the reptilian brain.

I don't remember all of it, but, as I mentioned to leethet, I was really taken with how Sagan took us through our evolution, and how all level of that evolution are still there within our brains.
