Somewhere in the night they are singing songs of death...

Colin Ross, twice thwarted in love, once abandoned, quit the mainland for Haven's End, a wounded soul on an idyllic island, seeking to heal his life.

But instead of peace, he is hurled into chaos. Some dark and ancient hatred, some evil force, is unleashed, wreaking vengeance on the islanders, mangling the living and mutilating the dead.

And, as the piercing songs rise to met the roaring wind, Colin Ross, against his will, is sucked into the raging storm.

The book took quite awhile to get going, and there were more than a few times that I felt like slapping Colin Ross across the head. Maybe it was supposed to show how damaged the man was, but at the same time he’s supposed to figure out what’s going on and deal with it. Made for a somewhat split personality. Is he weak, strong, a bit of both?

Still, I did enjoy the story once it got going. The characters were interesting, especially Peg, Colin’s love interest, and her son, Matt. The boy plays a large part in fitting the pieces together. He comes across as an inquisitive, yet not annoying kid.

One thing, I wasn’t crazy about the zombie inclusion. I realize that the book is rather old, written before the zombie craze. Yet it couldn’t help but turn me off somewhat.

So not a great book, but I’ve certainly read worse.

You are doing great on your challenges! I really wanted to try Holly but I am not sure how horror it is. I am not super big on horror but I do love a good tamer one. LOL I think Holly is a sequel to one of his other ones isn't it?

Thanks! Though right now I'm slogging through a real tome.

Holly doesn't have any supernatural horror; the horror is all what men do to men, so you should be fine. And, yes, there have been other books with Holly in them. The Mr. Mercedes trilogy, which doesn't have a lot of horror. And The Outsider, which does. I think The Outsider is my favorite of the books where Holly appears (lots of horror,) so probably not one that you'd enjoy.

I have been really curious about the series so I think I will put it on my tbr list for October. That is the best month to read some horror stuff. lol

I'm just always amazed at the amount of books you've read and how fast you seem to read, and I'm always intimidated, so I just lurk/ or peep at your blog and leave hahaha LOLL.

The word "song" seems to be attached to mermaids/sirens a lot in movies/books.
You have any horror book recommendations? Scariest book you read? My favorite genre.

I think the more you read, the rather you read. At least, that's been the way it is for me. But I have a friend who can get through a book in a day. I doubt I'll ever be that fast!

Usher's Passing by Robert McCammon is probably my favorite horror book, though just about anything by Stephen King is really good. Same with McCammon's. Love The Dead Zone, though it might be considered more as science fiction. Oh, and Dan Simmons' The Terror. Loved that one. And F. Paul Wilson's The Keep, and its sequels.

I think the scariest book I ever read was The Exorcist. Wouldn't dare watch the movie!
